Gave this place a try and it's the Talay Thai that we know and love. Everything seems to be on par with their Barrington street location with the food and service being great.
I have very rarely seen a restaurant bungle the dining experience as much as my visit to E-Pin for lunch today. This restaurant is still in its infancy and of course there will be a few kinks here and there but what I witnessed today bordered on the terrible and assured myself and the 4 other guests to never come back to E-Pin.
Up until ordering our experience at E-Pin seemed pleasant enough. The lunch menu offered a somewhat varied list of dishes to chose from. Our waiter was attentive and collected our orders quite swiftly. It was after this point that things just seemed to fall apart.
The restaurant began to fill up close to capacity. Having two waiters on the floor during the lunch rush obviously bogged things down. We eventually received our salad and soup. The salad and soup were very minimal, with the soup consisting of green onion and carrot shavings, if that. The soup was also cold for everyone.
Around the 45 minute mark after placing our orders, we began wondering what was taking so long. Glancing around the restaurant also assured me I wasn't alone in this thought. Many of the tables hadn't been served.
Around the hour mark, other tables began to be served even though they came in much later than us. Eventually, our waiter told us that our food would be out shortly, after he has just served another table that had just came in later than us.
Fifteen minutes later, two of the five of us were served our dishes. The dishes were cold and rather lackluster. Another 10 minutes passed after the two dishes had been served and we had yet to receive the rest of the meals. Scanning the restaurant once again, other tables were just as aggravated by the non existent service, even telling patrons waiting to be seated to not bother and go somewhere else. It was at this point that we decided to cut our loses and leave. Waiting an hour and a half for only 2/5 of our table to get a cold main course with little communication is just unacceptable.
Fujiyama has really struck the right balance between price and quality of sushi. Without question they have the best lunch specials in Halifax (18 pieces for 12 bucks). Their sushi is delicious and prepared fresh when you order. The servers have been nothing but nice and accommodating with patrons from what I've experienced.
That's not to say Fujiyama isn't without its flaws. Certain visits around lunch time have yielded exceedingly long wait times. Although rare, myself and others have experienced 40+ minute waits between ordering and the sushi arriving.
This shouldn't discourage the adventurous from trying this sushi restaurant especially given it's close quarters cave like interior which is quite striking and unique.
If there's one thing that I could suggest, it would be for Fujiyama to invest in a website again as theirs has been down for sometime now.
I've been hearing so many good things about Q Smokehouse lately, I had to see what all the hype was about. I came in right before the lunch rush and what a good thing because this place gets packed! I mean we're talking a line outside the door kind of packed.
Q isn't your typical restaurant. The menu is written out in chalk and you go up to make your order. The food as you may have deduced from the title is Southern style. Dishes consist of variations of pork, from ribs to pulled pork sandwiches and chicken. When you order your main dish, you have a variety of options for side dishes, like mac n cheese or fries. Ordering is painless and quick. When your food is ready, the staff call your name and you grab your plate.
I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and my friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. We both loved our respective sandwiches and the fries we're extremely delicious and crisp. The sandwich had just the right amount of chicken and sauce so it wasn't too overpowering or difficult to eat. Thankfully, Q provides each table with a massive amount of ketchup, sauces and even entire rolls of paper towel so you never have to conserve.
Dress wise, the atmosphere is definitely more laid back and casual. I don't recommend wearing overly bright colourful tones or white shirts as some of the dishes can get rather messy fast. The price was also more than reasonable for the amount of quality food offered in each dish. Overall, the experience at Q was great. The staff were super courteous to all the patrons, the food was delicious and the price was just right.
I've never been disappointed with the food at the Great Wall. Their spicy beef in particular has been some of the best I've had, and I highly recommend you try this dish out if you don't order one of their combo plates. Ambiance wise, this restaurant has a very old school, stereotypical 80s Chinese restaurant look. Service has been hit and miss, from servers who were excellent to ones who I felt I was invisible half the time. I pretty much order takeout from them now and have had no issue although it appears the majority of their business is through takeout so the waits can be a while.
One of the better pizza places in Halifax but they also make some other tasty dishes like poutine and garlic fingers which can really hit the spot especially after a night out. Their pizza sauce is definitely on another level and really makes their pizzas special.
This store is one of the only in Halifax the carry certain kind of running shoes. The fitters here aren't you average high schooler who has no idea what he's doing, a lot of them are seasoned runners. They'll make sure you get the exact shoe that meets your needs. I'll highly recommend you speak to Dana, this guy really knows his running shoes.
I've gone here a couple of times and it's always been a positive experience. I've noticed that there's quite the demographic diversity so don't be shy if you think this place swings to a certain demographic. Expect this place to be packed at night. They have trivia night on Mondays and open mic on Tuesdays which I've heard have always been fun.
The food is your typical pub affair. I've tried two main courses, burger and fish and chips and both were very good. Their nachos and wings are also fairly decent. They have all your standard assortment of beers and ales that you'd expect to see at an Irish Pub. My only one complaint which a few other reviewers have pointed out is that certain items like Stella or Guinness can be a bit pricey. Other than this quibble, Durty Nelly's is an good pub and one you should check out if you find yourself on Argyle.
I've been making my own pizza for several years now but the other day I saw Mumford pizza advertising that they made whole wheat pizzas and I decided to give them a shot. I ordered a large peperoni pizza which came out to be 18$ so relatively average price for that size.
The pizza arrived within 20 minutes and was nice and hot. The pizza itself was average, nothing to write home about but it did get that job done - I mean really it's hard to mess pizza up. I'd normally give this place a 3 stars for the food but with being one of the few places that makes whole wheat pizza, friendly service and prompt delivery (they're open late so they're great for those drunk late night cravings) I'd say that earns at least another star if not 1.5 stars if I could give that.
Went here the other night with a large group of people and we're quickly seated at probably one of the more busier times, score. The thing that stuck out immediately though was the place was absolutely deserted. I mean we're talking like my group , the waitress and a dust bunny kind of deserted. In comparison, the Moustache had over a twenty minute wait.
I think they're trying to be some kind of sports bar with all the jerseys on the wall and various sports games playing on the mounted lcds, however, the 90s pop punk music that was playing most of the night just does not compliment their desired style.
On to the food, I ordered the hot wings. They weren't overly hot or crisp and were rather forgettable. They also didn't have Keith's on tap. Overall, this place is by no means bad but like Halifaxer said, I'm not sure if this place I'd come to eat or just drink.
