Snau Bar is a restaurant you may not have heard of. Tucked away in Dresden Row, Snau Bar, features authentic Lebanese food and - if you're lucky - belly dancing.
Now this is the part where my review diverges with many other reviews. Snau Bar is a good restaurant and mostly likely you're going to enjoy the dishes if you like Mediterranean food, however, some of the dishes being served just missed the mark for me.
For instance, I have yet to have a decent tabbouleh in any restaurant and Snau Bar's was no exception, with too much lemon and almost completely devoid of the essentials. Their fatouche left much to be desired as well. Kudos though on the stuffed grape leaves and fried kibbeh which were excellent.
I attended a work party here, and I think it’s safe to say we all had a great time. The staff really took care of us, and the food was fantastic. Since I wasn’t really familiar with Lebanese food, I asked one of the waitresses to tell me what everything was, and this is just some of what we had: hummus and baba ghanouj with pita, cheese rolls, sambousik with cheese (this was my favourite), kebbeh, veggie grape leaves, fattouch and tabouleh salads, and then a BBQ feast of kafta (spicy ground beef), shrimp and taouk chicken over rice. All of these came as platters for people to share, and there was plenty to go around! As an added bonus, a bellydancer came to entertain us.
Although it was a mid-week dinner, I was surprised that no other customers came in while we were there, and I think the restaurant could’ve played some ambient music throughout the evening. Overall, though, this was a great experience and I would definitely like to go back and try out more of their menu. Definitely 4 stars, maybe 4.5!
I'm really not sure what half the stuff I ate was. But it generally tasted pretty good. We had a very wide selection of items.
Oh yeah, there was a belly dancer, which was kind of odd, but also quite enjoyable.
I never thought I'd notice humus being especially good, but here, it is. Everything is so fresh, from the in-house eggplant with tomato dip, to the fantastic cabbage rolls.
And the main course? Phenomenal! We had a selection of meets including tender chicken and lamb both marinated and lightly fried, and delicious shrimp and rice. Great restaurant, great service, and yes, the belly dancer was a bonus.
SnauBar (which mean Pine Nut in Arabic) offers a modern internal decor and authentic Lebanese food. Considering the price, quality of food, and quality of service, I'd say this is the best Lebanese restaurant in Halifax.
Check the events on their website, they have regular "free" professional belly-dancing performances - it was a night to remember.
