2 Reviews for Mary's Bread Basket
While no longer owned by the bakery's namesake, Mary Mohammed, Mary's Bread basket still holds a special place in the hears (and stomachs) of many a Haligonian. Mary's still operates out of the original home in The Brewery Market, and it is one of the only spots in the now-nearly-vacant marketplace that still draws a crown on Saturday mornings.... and WHY, you ask?
I assume that other items in their display case (including croissants, bear claws, cookies, banana bread, granola bars, and more) are popular and delectable, but Mary's is known for having the city's best, ooey, gooey, gargantuan (drum roll please) cinnamon rolls. These warm, doughey, cinnamon-spiced, and icing dredged treats are worth trekking across the harbour and waiting in line at the Brewer Market on Saturday mornings, or battling your way through the crowds at the new Seaport Market to their satellite Saturday location.
They're so yummy... they're almost too much sugary goodness... almost.
Everyone raves about Mary's cinnamon buns, but I found them overly dry and doughy and even devoid of cinnamon. Could it have been a bad day? Maybe, but I will say that their selection of croissants is mouth-watering, and I would definitely wait in the long market lineup for a chocolate croissant and coffee.
