We ate at Jane's On The Common last weekend and it was, as ever, a very good experience. I tried their seasonal special, beef tenderloin with seasonal veggies, followed by the pumpkin cheesecake ~ both were excellent.
I had started off with the local scallop starter, which came with a salad. The wine selection isn't vast, but the service and ambiance are both consistently good. Jane's never disappoints.
Going to Jane's is always a treat and not because it's expensive - it's quite inexpensive really, considering the food is fresh, local (when possible), and deliciously prepared. This cosy spot is a beautifully decorated haven for locals with exquisite, high quality food. Very popular, but worth the wait.
I've been to Jane's many times for brunch and lunch, and am torn about whether to give it 3 or 4 stars (maybe 3.5?). On the plus side, the service and food are consistently good. I particularly like the "Sweet potato biscuit crusted haddock" (which you can order with eggs for brunch, or with salad for lunch). On the negative side, the place is always crammed (at least it is whenever I'm there). It's a relatively small, open-concept restaurant, and when it's busy, the customers and tables are practically on top of each other. That also makes me feel like I have to rush. Personally, I like a bit more space and time.
