4 Reviews for Empire Oxford Theatre
The last charming, old-school theatre in Halifax, free of fancy, leather reclining chairs, or boombastic speakers and 3D effects, the Oxford Theatre is truly a gem, and the only theatre featuring independent, art and foreign films in the city. Who needs special seating and 3D effects when the theatre is beautiful and the movies you see are top-notch?
I also like the fact that this theatre doesn't have any of those electronic ticket vendors - you are actually greeted by a real person at a single-serve concession stand.
This old theatre has a lot of charm for sure, and the seats are really spacious, but the sound quality on most of the films I've seen has been mediocre. Also, if you sit in the first row of the balcony, make sure you can see over the railing; and there are other obstructed seats in the balcony too. Even if a movie sucks, being in the atmosphere of the Oxford makes it bearable. It just needs a better sound system to complete the enjoyment of being there.
There is something add to the value of watching a film in the the antique theater.
Its rustic feel creates an atmosphere in which you are transported back in time when films were shown one at a time.
Most of the original architecture is still in place and even the concession stands have a look about that demonstrates they are not from this time.
If you have a chance to check out a movie here please do so. The movie will only be enhanced buy the magical atmosphere that will transport you from this era.
They usually have non mainstream movies, but it's a nice place.
